The start of a new school year is always an exciting time. A blank page waiting to be filled with all those new ideas you have. Meeting new classes, reacquainting yourself with old ones and the promise of challenges to be met create a frenetic start and then the dust settles.  Before you realise, you know your timetable off by heart and it’s October – time for thought about where our classes are headed and how are we getting there?

Every class is a real mix of personalities and love of Science is on a sliding scale from ‘Professor Brian Cox’ to ‘what time does this lesson end?’. Our job is to ensure every child progresses and we are constantly reflecting on our teaching to improve and update it. To this end one of our current foci is ‘The Growth Mindset’.

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. If you have this view a love of learning is fostered and a resilience created. It is hypothesised that this is essential for great accomplishment.

Our mission here in the Priestland’s Science department is to help our students develop a growth mindset leading to great accomplishment in the tangible form of GCSE qualifications but also to become accomplished lifelong learners.
