STEM is an initiative to get children interested in science, technology, engineering and maths and this evening was the Hampshire launch of this years Stemnet challenge. This is an annual competition to showcase the talents of Hampshire schools which we hope to enter.
Currently we have two fledgling STEM clubs running at lunchtime, one for yr 7 and one for yr8. The yr7 one is based in technology and the focus is on hex bugs. The students are currently getting to grips with Corel draw so they can design and build their own hex bugs. Yr8 is mainly concentrating on rocket design with a view to entering the competition run by the national physics laboratory.
After a really worthwhile teacher meet today at Testbourne School I am inspired to make our STEM club much broader to encompass yr7, 8 and 9 and to enter our yr7 hex bug club for a bronze crest award. There is so much out there for our students, not enough hours in the day but from small beginnings…..watch this space!
