ASTRONAUT SCOTT KELLY RETURNS TO EARTH
After a year in space, on March 2nd Scott Joseph Kelly returned safely to Earth onboard a Soyuz rocket, with his ‘year in space’ compatriot, cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko.
A decorated Naval aviator, retired in 2012 after 25 years active service, but remains an astronaut and civil servant.
Scott has performed three EVA’s (space walks), spending over 18 hours in space!
He has worked on numerous science experiments including growing flowers and vegetables in microgravity.
He has undergone continuous biological testing as part of NASA’s Twins Study, alongside his brother Mark, to help further NASA’s understanding of how future space travellers will cope with the nine month long mission necessary to get to Mars.
He has kept his sense of humour! #Apeinspace
and provided us with amazing photos of our planet.
An exciting, worthy, prestigious space career for any astronaut, but let us not overlook the fact that Scott Kelly is an amazing, committed, altruistic individual; putting his own life on hold for lengthy periods, risking future serious, possibly life threatening illness due to the effects of long term microgravity and cosmic radiation; all for the benefit of science and humanity.
